Introduction

Hello. Callistonian.net is my stomping ground on the Internet. Here, I post a potpourri of things - this place is a little random. I'm Chantelle: a 23 year old foreign language, law, and history obsessed girl.

Gossip Girl revolves around the lives of privileged teens living in New York City’s Upper East Side. The vast majority of GG’s protagonists are spiteful and superficial: they are as deep as the ink on paper after a girl signs her name with a Montblanc fountain pen.

Almost two years—it’s been almost two years since I’ve masticated1 Korean black paste noodles (jajangmyun). Jajangmyun is one of the few dishes I love; I want to eat it. But, I cannot because I cannot find it anywhere.

I’ve given up on jajangmyun, but I was foolishly hoping that a local supermarket would have gochujang. Gochujang is this spicy red sauce that the distracted will mistake for ketchup… I want(ed) gochujang because I wanted a taste of Korea; I was also thinking that I could try to make a jajangmyun substitute dish (bibimbap).

I have a tendency to associate places with food, which is odd because I’m not big on food (my closest friends know my picky habits; they’re always finishing my plates and relieving me of food I dislike). I associate the Musée Rodin and France, in general, with caramel ice cream. I was a vanilla ice cream girl2; I still am. But caramel ice cream is to die for. I had my first taste of caramel ice cream somewhere outside of the Musée Rodin. Its statues are fabulous, of course, but if you go there - view The Thinker and then get some ice cream. ♥ I associate Paris with macaroons; Japan with crêpes3.

Anyway…, I went to the supermarket. I didn’t find gochujang. But I did find inappropriately branded yogurt: yomomma yogurt. Okay, it probably said “yomommy” but I like to think of it as yomomma (as in really bad jokes, as in yo momma so lazy she thinks a two-income family is where yo daddy has two jobs). The yogurt is for pregnant women.

While there, I bought some things—three random things. I bought vanilla rice-based ice cream (it almost tastes like regular ice cream), a small sitck of England’s cadbury milk cholocate, and oatmeal. Yep.

1 I know. I know. I hate this word. I shouldn’t use it. But, in this context, it feels so appropriate.
2 Chocolate ice cream ftl, my friends.
3 I realize that the Japanese associate is weird.

“Masticate,” is one of the ickiest words. Really. It reminds me of… rolling food in your mouth and being unable to swallow, for hours. I get a lump in my throat and the urge to gag thinking about it. No, no, I do not like this word.

Cookie dough ice cream is where it’s at! I mean, it’s cookies AND ice cream! I am totally buying myself a small carton for Valentine’s Day and letting loose. My parents are going out, so I shall stay home, wear comfy pyjamas, watch a movie, eat ice cream, and think about mastication. Ew.

Thanks Chantelle, you’ve ruined eating for me!

I’m glad you explained what masticated meant, lol

Masticate is such an ugly word … it reminds of masturbate, castigate, and castrate. =|

Anyway, I love food, and I love when people talk about food! Unfortunately, I’ve never had most of the things you’ve mentioned… not even caramel ice cream. I’m a cookie dough and mint chocolate chip (not together) ice cream girl.

Whenever I hear/read the word masticate, I remember our punishment for chewing gum in class in the seventh grade; lines: “I will not masticate artificially flavoured resin in Mr C’s learning environment” :P

Chocolate ice cream, ftw. I can eat other flavours, but chocolate is my favourite.

Anyways, I don’t think I really associate foods with places at all, unless you count associating Happy Meals with McDonalds. I haven’t travelled very much, and everything I like eating in Egypt is available here.

I’m definently a food person :). Masticate is an odd word, to say the least. It doesn’t exactly paint the prettiest picture in one’s head :P. I think vanilla icecream is so boring by itself. I definently love pomegranite and blueberry burst icecream :), and anything with alot of chocolate :P. I hope you find the jajangmyun that you really want!

Masticate doesn’t sound disgusting to me at all - probably because I’m used to its Spanish counterpart “Masticar” for everyday use XD

I didn’t know you could make ice cream with rice, interesting. Oh, and I really lol’d at that yo momma joke XD

Chocolate ice cream is not ftl, but I do agree that vanilla is good too… but I just prefer chocolate, not because it’s any sweeter because I find vanilla to be, it’s just less blah to me!

I want some ice cream now, even though I am freezing!

Masticate seems like it would be on one of those lists of words never to use in your writing, like plethora (I remember plethora was on my list)… and also, it reminds me of masturbation, so yeah, that can’t be… wholesome!

@Rafia: I always want ice cream when I’m cold. I wonder why.

But what sort of lists are you talking about? Why is poor “plethora” on it? There’s nothing wrong with that word. And “masticate,” as much as I hate it, is a useful word. It is absolutely the perfect term to use when describing someone nasty eating something nasty. It gets the imagery just right.

I only used it here to be ironic/funny/to get people’s attention.

Hahah your blog has made me so insanely hungry! Rice-based ice cream sounds…like a novelty!

Mmmm…food. I usually associated places with food too.

I didn’t know you could make ice cream with rice. Wait. I remember hearing about it on our food menu at school before…something like fried ice cream. You just made me crave ice cream with the mentioning of vanilla, chocolate, caramel, and rice based ice cream.

I forgot to mention that I love your layout. Blue and purple of that shade are my favorite, and then to blend them in such an artistic way!

Chantelle, it was a list of words not to use on the AP English exam that my teacher gave to us. Plethora was top on that list (maybe it was his own list, I always assumed it was from the AP board)… so I’ve always been afraid to use it in my writing.

I’ll have to search for it to make sure though!
