Introduction

Hello. Callistonian.net is my stomping ground on the Internet. Here, I post a potpourri of things - this place is a little random. I'm Chantelle: a 23 year old foreign language, law, and history obsessed girl.

Cecily von Ziegesar’s Gossip Girl #1
Gossip Girl revolves around the lives of privileged teens living in New York City’s Upper East Side. The vast majority of GG’s protagonists are spiteful and superficial: they are as deep as the ink on paper after a girl signs her name with a Montblanc fountain pen.

Pranksters— Prank calling is for __ ? The immature? The bored? The easily amused? Radio DJs? I hardly know. But, in my area, some radio DJs have moved on from terrorizing people on the telephone with gibberish and ridiculous antics.

Have they become more mature? No. Do they still terrorize people on the phone? Absolutely. Now, though, instead of speaking gibberish, they delight in making their prey feel stupid by asking random questions.

DJ: Hello?
Prey: Hello?
DJ: Yeah, I’m sorry—I was wondering if you could help me with something. I have a question.
Prey: Erm… okay.
DJ: Which continent is North America?
Prey: ??? T_T

In the situtation above, the integrity of the person being sacrificed for humor could have been easily saved—I mean, seriously … ! BUT perhaps while putting someone on the spot, asking her to respond to the trick question with “North America is a continent” is asking too much?

Either way, answers such as “Canada” and “4 or 5″ are unacceptable. :( At the time, I couldn’t believe that no one, out of about 10 people, dealt with the question acceptably.

Test— At any rate, I have a test for you.1 It’s not to make you feel stupid. It’s to make you feel clever. If you handle it well, you’re cleverer than most. ♥

E 3 8 C

Let’s pretend that the images represent cards. If each card has a vowel on one side, then it has an odd number on the other side. The preceding if statement may or may not be true. So, in order to test this if statement, which card(s) should be turned over?

Here’s the solution. Did you get it wrong or right?

There were lots of nice things in it including: the cutest little unicorn and material to feed my addictions (a notebook! and stationery!). Thanks so much, Lene. ♥

That puzzle made my brain hurt. I didn’t understand it until after I looked at the answer. But now I get it and I feel stupid, not smart. Sorry. :D

Author’s Response: Don’t let it hurt your brain and don’t feel stupid. It’s a random logic question. XD

Nice puzzle, I thought of the answers so quickly that I was surprised when I checked it and it was right :P I feel 0.8% cleverer XD

I’m glad you got the package :3

Author’s Response: Only .8%? Oh well. Thanks again for the package. ♥

Yay, I actually got it with looking at the solution!

“DJ: Which continent is North America?
Prey: ??? T_T”

I would just hang up. :P

We had this brain test in theory of knowledge and I still got it wrong haha

Oh dear. I think my brain FAILZ. :O

I suck at life.

But that’s okay, I already knew it.

I’m so afraid for the LSAT. Are they going to test me on things like this?

Author’s Response: There are logic puzzles on the LSAT. :/

Wait a minute… why would anyone respond “4 or 5″ to “Which continent is North America?” I dun geddit. :P I have to admit I cheated on the test and looked at the solution before I even had an answer, but oh well!

Author’s Response: You don’t get it, because it doesn’t make any sense. :( I don’t get “4 or 5″ either.

Those DJs sound annoying. Do they play the prank calls live? I would probably respond with “North America is the continent in the north-west corner of a map” :P

It took me a while to “get” the test, but I did end up with the right solution! Yay :)

And Lene is so sweet :3 In other news, it took me a while to realize that those two circles beside the heart [∞] was infinity :P

I think the reason people sound so dumb on those prank calls is that the radio stations never air the ones that aren’t funny (e.g. the people who catch on to the prank) or their caller is in on the joke, or even an employee. Oftentimes, radio stations aren’t as honest as they may seem! I felt totally dumb taking that test, haha. Where did you hear about it?

I’ve seen that card thing like a million times and I still got it wrong. I’m like one of those mentally handicapped monkey who can’t learn from its mistakes. Omg, I can’t even spell monkeys right, the spell checker caught me *hits head* I blame daylight savings!

Sheesh, there’s no way I can figure that out -__-

I may be the only one, but I find those radio prank calls rather amusing at times.

I thought about this hard (I really hate these brainteaser questions but I had to do it D:) and… 3 and C should be turned over.

The solution was actually the opposite of what I chose, but it works both ways, doesn’t it? You pick one card that isn’t included in the “if statement” (C, a consonant) and one that is (3, an odd number). If there is an even number on the other side of C and a vowel on the other side of 3, it proves the “if statement” is true.

If each card has a vowel on one side, then it has an odd number on the other side.

Author’s Response: ??? :( You’ve confusing me, but no it doesn’t work both ways. The opposite sides of 3 and C have nothing to do with proving the if statement, because the statement does not say anything about even numbers or “if each card has an odd number on one side, it has a vowel on the other side.” So anything can be on the other side of 3 - if it happens to be a vowel that doesn’t really prove anything. The same goes for C. Anything can be on the other side of it. But if there isn’t an odd number on the opposite side of E, then the statement is false. If there is a vowel on the opposite side of 8, then the statement is false as well…

Hopefully, that made sense. :D
