Introduction

Hello. Callistonian.net is my stomping ground on the Internet. Here, I post a potpourri of things - this place is a little random. I'm Chantelle: a 23 year old foreign language, law, and history obsessed girl.

Cecily von Ziegesar’s Gossip Girl #1
Gossip Girl revolves around the lives of privileged teens living in New York City’s Upper East Side. The vast majority of GG’s protagonists are spiteful and superficial: they are as deep as the ink on paper after a girl signs her name with a Montblanc fountain pen.

How do you spend money? Aside from saving, hording, buying necessities &c., the money I spend tends to fall into two categories: things that are good for my brain and things that are pretty.

My most recent purchase: a Japanese abacus, a soroban. It’s being shipped from Japan now. It’s supposed to help me with my “calculator-dependency.” What’s 21+213+2434+-1232-45+867? I don’t know. I can figure it out, but problems like that make me want a calculator! After I get my magical brain-enhancer (a soroban), I’ll be able to multiply six digit numbers in my head in 3 seconds (like those in this soroban video). Perhaps I won’t become that badass (or close), but I’ll still become better with mental math than I am …

Now that I have you safely impressed by my intellectual ambitions and mad math skillz (more mad math skills here), I’m going to take a risk. I’m going to expose a darker side of my personality. This side of me indulges in Gossip Girl, wears large sunglasses, drinks overly-priced and fancifully titled concoctions from coffee chains, and adventures around in skirts—scared, yet? This silly side of me is also fed up with my intellectual pursuits and has decided that my next random-wth-purchase is going to be impractical, but who cares? What matters here is looks. It has decided that these shoes are pretty. I want them. If they’re at J.Crew when I get there, I’ll be walking out with a new pair of shoes!!1!1! ♥

Anyway, how do you spend your money?

Those shoes are horrible. :(

I spend my money on… music and films.

That video was so awesome that I think I’m going to buy one of those soroban things too. :p

How could I possibly be scared? You just described me. :P

I’m not a fan of those flats though. :(

My money goes on living (rent & board, bills, petrol), education (textbooks, stationary supplies {nothing pretty, just practicality!}, tuition), and travel. It seems like I spend a lot on clothes and going out, but when compared to the other outlets into which I pour my money, it’s a pittance!

You’re a good girl and at least buy things that I good for your brain. I just hoard all the pretty stuff. It’s a bad habit because when I move out, all I’ll want to buy is random crap when I need to buy food and stuff!

Hmm..my money goes to pay the apartment loan, food, bus card, necessities and the rest goes to …SHOPPING! I’m so irrational that I’m always buying skinny jeans and shoes whenever the chance. I spend a lot of money on clothes and perfumes, lotions etc. I’m a girly girl with a tomboy attitude.

I liked the shoes even though I’m tired of ballerinas. Yes for gladiator sandals this year!

[…] Posted in Daily life, Science, Video tagged maths, soroban at 9:48 am by LeisureGuy I got and used a soroban as my primary calculator for some years. Once you learn the handful of basic combinations, you can add quite quickly—and addition was all I ever attempted, though the soroban can be used for the other arithmetic operations. I prefer the soroban to the Chinese abacus because of the soroban’s simplicity: 4 lower beads, one upper, in contrast to the Chinese style of 5 lower beads, two upper. The grandson has a soroban, but I’m not sure that he uses it. Perhaps he should watch this video, which I found on Callistonian.net. […]

Lately the biggest expenses seem to be food and shaving supplies. In the past… oh, my! Fountain pens, pocket knives, books, CDs, Go sets, cookware … so many things, and now I must find homes for them.

I don’t have money to “throw away” anymore, so right now my money goes to food and gasoline.

When I get extra cash (rarely XD), I spend it in stationery and books :) Right now I’m saving for a new camera… I only need like $600 more XD

I rarely spend money on clothes / shoes anymore. When I had my other job I made a reasonable amount of money that I spent on countless clothes and shoes, so I’m good for now.

Don’t listen to Rachael, those pink shoes are adorable!

I miss Jcrew soooo much. It sucks that they don’t ship to Germany yet. It sucks lots. I love their flip flops, I’ll only wear “normal casual” flip flops from Jcrew :) I love their ballerina shoes as well, but gosh, they’re expensive. Some things are really cheap, some things are sooo expensive. I love to browse their site though and just dream. So yeah, now you know my passion for Jcrew.

This month I spent my money on running shoes and pants (Nike) and two tops. And doing social things like going out for brunch or to cafès. I like spending money for that.

I spend most of my money on entertainment items like dvds and books, and the rest on clothes. Best of both worlds :D

As soon as I saw “those shoes are horrible”, I knew it was Rachaely. ;)

I usually buy clothes, books, and music. My last 3 purchases were Juno, a hoodie, and an iPod case thingy. (But not in that order.)

I’m impressed that you actually buy such brainy things. All your other purchases are “normal” :P

I mostly spend my money on food, but I have cut back a lot recently.

I like those flats. If they were a darker pink, I would buy them.

I spend my money on BILLS! Forreals, I wish I could afford to splurge more. When I can afford to splurge I purchase concert tickets, movies, and music. Mostly music.

I tend to spend my money on three things: games, books, impulse buys. The latter usually involve cute trinklets or pretty coloured yarn. :P

I totally forgot to mention in my last comment that I got your present and ZOMG I loved it X3
So I completely believe you when you say you like mind puzzles! I thought that cube was going to be impossible to solve, kind of like a rubiks cube, but I solved it three times! *feels brilliant* - actually, that was looking at the instructions, and I’m sure it’ll take me a while before solving it without a paper telling me how :P I’ll write back to finish talking about this, because I discovered how much I like mailing things out :D

Oh, and I also forgot to mention that I had this HUGE eBay addiction a while ago (when I had my previous job). My mail is delivered to my dad’s house because it’s my most “permanent” address, and he was pissed at all those packages arriving for me on a daily basis. One time he called saying that I had 11 packages there, including a huge one that said “GUITAR” …lol.

So yeah… around that time I bought: a pink guitar (that I recently gave away to a -male- friend that wanted a guitar very badly XD), a wireless mouse, a 2gb flash drive, a cuuute wallet, about 5 orders of many many earrings/accessories from Claire’s, bags, movies, gilmore girls on dvd, accessories for my phone, accessories for the zune I had, tons and tons of books (see my bookshelf…lol), In the groove game + pads for PS2, and a dagger (which my dad thought was a dildo when it came in the mail and he was all “:O!!!!!”

I can’t remember anything else, but I’m sure there are a lot more things that I’m forgetting. If I had money to spare I would still be buying lots of random things I don’t need like back then :D

I spend my money on books and going to the movies :). Those shoes are really cute, I would love them in yellow :D.

I spend all my money on clothes…
I love those shoes, although I’d love them more if they were dark blue or black :)

@Lene: :D I’m glad you got it. I’m glad you liked it too. LOL @ your dad mistaking a dagger for a dildo.

Hahaha I love your extremes, I’m similar too I guess - one minute geeky computer stuff the next, THE LATEST TRENDS FROM RUNWAY DESIGNERS!

I want that Japanese abacus. Really badly. =OO

I spend the bulk of my money on books and shoes, really, although sometimes clothes get factored into the equation, too (last week = Kenneth Cole sale = skirt & top & two tank tops = $74 = I FLOATED home.). Yesterday I was just so annoyed by life in general that I decided I HAD to buy a pair of shoes after work, which I did (these, except for $60!). I haven’t even bothered calculating how much money I spend on tea & lunch during the day at work - my best guess is a lot, but that’s really a necessity.

The abacus looks awesome! Too bad I failed at figuring out a normal abacus in grade school, no matter how hard my parents tried to explain it to me.

[…] Ring tones annoy some, but today one made my day! I was in the mall—I went to get those shoes, but they weren’t there—A classy lady with the cutest baby had Wonder Girls’ Tell […]
