Introduction

Hello. Callistonian.net is my stomping ground on the Internet. Here, I post a potpourri of things - this place is a little random. I'm Chantelle: a 23 year old foreign language, law, and history obsessed girl.

Cecily von Ziegesar’s Gossip Girl #1
Gossip Girl revolves around the lives of privileged teens living in New York City’s Upper East Side. The vast majority of GG’s protagonists are spiteful and superficial: they are as deep as the ink on paper after a girl signs her name with a Montblanc fountain pen.

NaNoWriMo. I signed up. I don’t have any concrete story ideas; I don’t know if I’m going to write anything. But I signed up. That must count for something. I’m toying with the thought of writing a YA-ish piece from various perspectives. I made a character and a website for Rhiannon’s Worst Website Competition 2007, and I think that maybe it’ll be fun (in a slightly masochistic way) to write more from Ella’s point-of-view. There’s also the Korean Drama-like novella that I was working on. Hmm…

If you signed up for NaNoWriMo, how’s your novel going?

Also, I’m engaged! Oh wait—I’m engaged in my dreams. In one of them, my friend asked me to marry him—and guess what?—I said, “Yes.” I don’t know what I was thinking nor do I know what he was thinking. I’ve never had a dream in which I’ve put myself and someone else I know in anything that resembles a romantic situation, and sometimes I even have control over my nighttime musings, so this is completely weird. It doesn’t help that in the real world, I’m a little pissed at him… How could I say, “yes?” Anyway, because we’ve busy been (or, at least, he has), I haven’t talked to him in awhile but when I do it’ll be hard to shake the I-had-a-distrubing-dream-about-you feeling.

Disclaimer: This is a housekeeping entry. It is not an exercise in fine writing. Please, excuse the mess.

In the interest of allowing my readers to learn more about me as a person, rather than me as a blogger, and because I fear nothing, and show everything…ask me a question. Any question you want. - Amanda

I’m following the trend that Amanda began—ask away. Questions and answers will be added to my Ask & Answer page.

two. I will blog about something other than nonsense later. Who’d have thought, right? Suggestions for blog topics or articles are welcome—if there’s anything that you want to hear me go on about, let me know!

three. Also, this layout isn’t quite right. I want to make another one with the same theme of Versailles. Suggestions? Criticisms?

It is harder, sometimes, to review a glorious book—to convey its power and influence without relying on suspicious adjectives. Good books can be slotted, characterized, explained; great books often cannot. I believe Geraldine Brooks’ new novel, March, is a very great book. I believe it breathes new life into the historical fiction genre, the borrowing- a- character- from- the- deep- past phenomenon, the old I- shall- tell- you- a- story- through- letters tradition. I believe it honors the best of the imagination. I give it a hero’s welcome. - Chicago Tribune

The Chicago Tribune puts it best but—yes, I attempted to review March. My review is here.

five. I have an exam on Thursday. Wish me luck!

six. Things of interest:

  1. After the taser incident at the university in Florida, the domain donttazemebro.com was registered.
  2. The Prehistory of Emoticons

I. My addition skills are in fine form (I can add!). Recently, I’ve been doing a lot of cross-sums puzzles (Kakuro).  I’m not very good at them yet. But- I’m definitely in the process of developing mad skillz.

II. TV? It’s just not fun anymore. We’ve cable, movie channels, and all sorts of things but, I rarely place myself in front of a television. I’m only interested in watching two shows. 1: The Amazing Race. 2: The Tudors. But, the Amazing Race comes on at 2 in the morning and my family decided to cancel Showtime (The Tudors only airs on Showtime!). I’m out of luck.

(Honestly, I tolerate MTV every now & then.)

III. The real purpose of this entry: to say that I’ve launched a reviewing section (Reviews(at) callistonian.net woo!).  Currently, there’s only one review up. It’s of a Japanese pop album. If you’re interested in that sort of thing or open-minded, check it out.

right now-

I. I’m debating the merits of an iPhone. I’m a sucker for gadgets & pretty things. The iPhone is gorgeous. I’m switching cell phone companies & I need a new phone. Do I need an iPhone? Of course, I don’t but… it’d be nice? It all depends on how much the monthly bill is & what I decide to do about a new computer &c.

II. I’m waiting on phone calls. I’m developing a new pet peeve: an annoyance with people who say they will return calls & then, don’t. I only hope that they call before I change my number.

For reference, the thing that annoys me most: people who ignore the existence of you’re. Your isn’t the same. It really isn’t the same. Everyone has their issues with grammar and their own grammatical quirks and I understand this but, I cannot cope with those who ignore the differences between your and you’re. For some reason, even ur is less grating on my nerves.

III. I want to eat Bibimbap (비빔밥). It’s healthy & delicious. It’s amazing. Try it. I think that I dislike Korean food & yet, I’m always craving random Korean dishes… Perhaps this is because I abhor the food that I associate with Korea the most (kimchi).

IV. I’m thinking that I need to study. I’ve got the GRE coming up so, if my blog entries stop sounding colloquial and begin to sound ostentatious it’s because I like words & such & am using the GRE as an excuse to be a lexiphanic writer.

In the 11th grade, I had this teacher who was a walking dictionary. If we knew a non-technical term that he didn’t… he would give us extra credit. Perhaps he’s subconsciously influencing me.

V. I’m also pondering the merits of studying three different foreign languages in one summer (Korean, Japanese, & French). I should read books as well… There are so many things that I want to read up on (IP, Physics, Math!, PHP, Design)… I don’t know what to do. I have lots of interests; they make life chaotic but, at least, I’m not interested in everything.

VI. About this site: if you scroll down, you’ll see thumbnails. The thumbnail in the top left is synced with my slightly updated flickr account.
